Let's Talk: Surprise Parties

It's Been a While!

I started this blog to share my "why"—the reason behind Let's Celebrate. For me, it’s all about the importance of making memories, celebrating life’s moments, and being present with the people we love. Over the years, I’ve learned so much about what it means to bring joy to others through celebrations, and I wanted to create a space to share that with you.

You may have noticed it’s been a while since I last posted. Life has been busy—both personally and professionally—and sometimes the things we love get pushed to the side. But as I’ve been planning events and watching people come together to celebrate, I realized how much I missed sharing these experiences with you. So, I’m back, and I’m excited to reconnect and continue this journey together.

Surprise Party

Have you ever been part of a surprise party? Maybe you were the one planning it, or perhaps you were the one being surprised?

It was 1995. My sister had just turned 18, and I was about to turn 17 on my golden birthday. Our parents told us our cousin was flying into town, and we needed to pick her up at General Mitchell Airport. (Remember when we could actually go all the way to the gate?!)

We arrived at the airport and walked to the gate—no cousin! We checked all the gates, but there was no sign of her. Finally, we found a pay phone (I’m really showing my age now!) and called home to figure out what had happened. Our mom said our cousin had arrived early and taken a cab to our house. We were skeptical, but we decided to play along. When we got home, we rushed downstairs to say hello, only to be met with a "SURPRISE!"—a double surprise for our birthdays! We did eventually tell everyone that we had figured it out. I often wonder how that made them feel, especially my mom. It was still an amazing party, and we didn’t realize they had planned it until almost the very end. Now, looking back, I wonder—should we have kept quiet?

I've had the privilege of being involved in several surprise parties since then.

  • My dad’s 40th, where we sent him to Brookfield Square to "fix" a broken-down car.

  • Surprising our grandparents with a special dinner on a train and flying in family for the event.

  • Planning a surprise 30th birthday party for my husband.

  • Surprising our kids with a Disney trip and a new puppy (two separate years, haha!).

And now, I have the pleasure of helping you plan surprises. We can help you throw that unforgettable surprise party.

I’d love to know—have you ever been part of a surprise party? Were you the one being surprised? How did it go? Tell me in the comments!

Best,

Kim

For some reason I don't really remember sending you and Ally to the airport. I vividly remember sending dad to Brookfield Square and surprising him when he came back. Definitely been a part of some fun surprises, but never had one pulled on me. Maybe my background makes me too suspicious...lol.
